On January 1, 2018, Inatsisartut Act No. 21 of November 28, 2016, on Mandatory Pension Schemes came into effect. The Act was amended in 2019 to Inatsisartut Act No. 16 of June 12, 2019, concerning Amendments to the Inatsisartut Act on Mandatory Pension Schemes (Linguistic adjustment of the Greenlandic title of the Act and exemption of mayoral remuneration from the savings base).

According to the Act, individuals who are 18 years or older and fully taxable in Greenland must begin contributing to a pension scheme until they reach retirement age. Contributions will be based on a percentage of the annual savings base, which includes total A and B income.

There are exceptions to the Act. If the savings base is DKK 125,000 or less, no mandatory pension contribution is required. Furthermore, benefits such as civil servant pensions, early retirement pensions, and old-age pensions, assistance to persons with severe disabilities, child allowances, support for children and youth, public assistance, housing subsidies, and educational grants are excluded from the savings base.
